The Four Areas of Clinical Hygiene
Hygiene and disinfection in the healthcare sector can be categorised into four distinct areas; Instrument care, Surface care, Special Area care and Skin and Hand care.
The majority of products within these areas are colour coded to help ensure ease of use with staff and the correct application is used in the correct environment.

Instrument care
All types of instruments require cleaning and disinfection after use. This includes hand tools such as scalpels and forceps and powered tools such as handpieces and burs. Products that have been designed for use on instruments are usually coloured blue.
Surface Care
In any clinical environment the disinfection of surfaces is vital to stopping the spread of disease and infection. This can be achieved with both alcohol free (orange) and alcohol based (green) products, usually in the form of a wipe or spray.
Special Area Care
Items included within the special areas category include dental impressions and aspirator / suction systems. Complete cleaning and disinfection of these items is considered absolutely necessary. Products designed for this purpose are usually marked yellow.
